What is LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK, or laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure using a laser beam to reshape your cornea, the transparent layer forming the front of your eye. This refractive surgery corrects common vision complications like nearsightedness, farsightedness, presbyopia, and astigmatism, and may involve removal of corneal tissue.

During a thorough discussion and a non-invasive, comprehensive eye exam, Dr. Lovero will determine if you’re a good candidate for LASIK surgery.

The exam includes pupil dilation, a prescription measurement, and a tear-film test to check for dry eyes. Specific laser eye surgery tests to measure your cornea and note the thickness and curvature will help Dr. Lovero to determine if LASIK surgery will help you.

During the surgery, the ophthalmologist utilizes computer technology to adjust the laser for your prescription. You’ll look at the target laser for a short time as it sends pulses of light to reshape your cornea, correcting and improving your vision.

You’ll need follow-up visits afterward for the doctor to determine how well your eyes are healing. The day after your procedure, you’ll likely have your first follow-up visit where Dr. Lovero will carefully examine your corneas and inquire about the first phase of the recovery period.

While you may feel mild irritation, almost as if there’s an eyelash in your eye, you shouldn’t feel pain or severe discomfort. Follow-up visits are your chance to discuss how you’re recovering, and how well the LASIK treatment has worked for you.

Will I be a good candidate for LASIK?

• Able to lie flat, face up, for the duration of the procedure

• Able to keep the eye being treated accurately fixed on a set point of light for a minute or two to ensure best results
